Colonel escapes bid on life
8/12/2010 12:10:52 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU/RAJOURI, Aug 11: In an ambush by five odd militants at Manyal Gali in Thanamandi, Rajouri, while a woman today lost her life and 22 others, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police and two army personnel, sustained serious injuries, a Colonel, understood to be the main target of the attackers, survived providentially due to the courage and presence of mind shown by his driver. While the army Gypsy carrying Col PG Sangpal -- CO of 48 RR -- was the main target of militants, the Video Coach was also caught in firing, police sources said. The militants were wearing army uniforms, the sources added. The CO had two escort Gypsies. While one was ahead of his vehicle, the other was behind it. The militants did not fire at the first escort vehicle. The moment they saw Col Sangpal's Gypsy approaching their ambush point, they swiftly came on the road and fired at it from the driver's side. Though bullets hit driver, Naik Dalip Singh, he did not stop and sped away, the sources added. Sepoy Kirpal Singh, who was in the CO's vehicle, also sustained bullet i...

SUMIT SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 11: To curb the menace of traffic rules' violations, the Traffic police have initiated a number of measures which are showing some fruitful results as far as checking the law breakers. The induction of ladies police into the Traffic wing is one such step which has immensely helped the traffic police to deal more firmly with the violators. With the introduction of women police constables, the Traffic police which was, otherwise, grappling with the shortage of staff is now, somewhat, got strengthened. Suddenly the cops in blue uniform are more visible on Jammu district's roads with the result they have tightened the noose around the habitual o...

PM throws ball into the court of J&K 'politicians
Consensus an elusive dream?
8/12/2010 12:09:02 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 11: Hope and Optimism. These are two key words around which the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has tried to weave a 'well intentioned' picture for 'durable' peace in Kashmir in his latest speech. But in political terms actually, he has pushed the ball once again in the court of all hues of politicians and political parties of J&K, in a way asking them to enable positive things to happen with consensus. 'Consensus' is a very decent and docile term which reflects the true spirit of democratic freedom and expression. But in a politically complicated state like J&K ridden with ridden only with complexities, this has only far fetched connotations. Consensu...

Who wants autonomy?
8/12/2010 12:08:36 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: Prime Minister's assurance of a political solution to Kashmir problem was widely discussed here today. Reactions ranging from subtle to critical poured in all day. The separatists rejected the offer straightway. However, a part of the mainstream lobby welcomed the development. The Prime Minister's assurance has raised many questions. If restoration of internal autonomy is the proposed political package for silencing dissent in Kashmir, then New Delhi has to do a lot of thinking. Where the autonomy dose work in Jammu and Ladakh? Who wants autonomy in Kashmir? Barring National Conference (NC) nobody is interested in it. Even the pro-Indian Peoples Democ...

8/12/2010 12:08:02 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: The Panthers Party leadership is highly critical of what it has called "the politics of duplicity" being practised by the state unit of the BJP. Claiming that the BJP had close links with the ruling National Conference the working chairman Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, said "it was strange that in public the BJP has been pleading for imposing Governor's rule in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir but in private it was opposed to any change in the guard." In support of his contention Harsh Dev Said that it was amazing that during the All Party meeting convened by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on Tuesday the BJP leaders opposed any de...

Time to take cognizance of controversial NDTV, Barkha, Amitabh, Siddiq
8/12/2010 12:07:36 AM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 11: Don't mark time. To mark time would be to lose Kashmir and enable communal forces in Kashmir to establish in the state "Nizam-e-Mustafa." To mark more time would also be to provoke explosions and widespread protests in the otherwise peaceful regions of Jammu and Ladakh, where the concerned and ignored people are watching with vigilance all the developments as they have been unfolding in the terrorist and separatist-infested Kashmir and New Delhi. The alienated people of Jammu and Ladakh are fed up not only with the kind of politics the Kashmiri leaders have been playing, as also with the Valley-centric policies being pursued by New Delhi, but also ...

The anti-India and pro-Kashmiri separatist elements in the University of Jammu, which not so-long-ago was considered by the people of Jammu as one of the premier schools of learning in the state, are using this temple of learning not only for promoting the cause of the Kashmiri separatists and terrorists but also for creating a dangerous regional and religious divide in the state for ulterior purposes.
