2 women of one family killed, 5 hurt in Pak shelling on IB at Samba | 3 BSF cops among 10 wounded at different places on IB; LoC peaceful | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 8: There are winds of destiny that blow when we least expect them. Booti Ram (70) and his seven family members, who spent the night in a makeshift Samba camp to save themselves from the Pak shells, returned home at Chilyari, a border Samba village, this morning. While they were sipping tea, a mortar fired from across the International Border (IB) landed in their verandah and exploded, resulting in the instant death of two family women and critical injuries to five others.
As Pakistan has constantly been targeting forward BSF outposts and border villages for the past over a week now, almost all the people living close to the IB have migrated to makeshift camps set up at places which are beyond the reach of the Pak shells and bullets. Booti's family was also ...

| | Visiting shelling affected areas: Tussle for political one-upmanship among Cong leaders | | |
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 8: At a crucial juncture when Jammu is fighting a war like situation, there is tussle for political one-upmanship among Congress leaders to take political mileage of the prevailing situation in this region.
Acting like a leader of this region, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been conducting whirlwind tour of the areas affected by the firing from across the border. But Azad's detractors in the Congress party are finding it difficult to digest popularity gained by former Chief Minister while visiting these affected areas.
Interestingly, Azad as a tall leader of the Congress had conducted extensive tour o...
| | J&K jails; 1 medical officer for 39 inmates | Correctional cadre yet to be created | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Oct 8: While the State Government is yet to create correctional cadre, Jails in Jammu and Kashmir have shockingly 1 medical officer for 39 inmates.
Jails lack adequate facilities for both prisoners as well as staffers who work round the clock to ensure jail security besides taking all possible measures to correct the behaviour of inmates. Most of the jails are understaffed. Medical faculties are negligible. Baring officers, Jail staffers have to live in rented accommodations due to seemingly disinterest of Government in constructing residential quarters for them. Prisoners have no specialized officers to look after their medical needs and correct their behaviour ...
| | Is Omar seeking re-entry into NDA? | For power | | Rustam
JAMMU, Oct 8: Is the beleaguered NC working president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah seeking to re-enter the BJP-led NDA so that he and his party remain somewhat relevant in the state? This question assumes importance in view of some of the recent statements Omar Abdullah himself made, the latest being made on October 6 at Jammu. After visiting Arnia, which suffered heavy shelling from across the border and led to the death of five innocent civilians, including two women, and listening to the heart-rending tales from the victims of Pakistani terrorism at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, Omar Abdullah attacked Pakistan and urged one and all to condemn Pakist...
| | Flood Control Minister maintains 'golden silence,' stays away from operations | One month on, State Govt fails to fix responsibility for catastrophe | | Fazal Khan
SRINAGAR, Oct 8: A month after Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the worst floods of the century the State Government has failed to fix the responsibility for the mismanagement of the disaster and its aftermath.
Disappointing role played by the officials of the Flood Control Department during the catastrophe has come under severe criticism as none of the officials could do much too even inform the people that Jhelum is roaring and is all set to enter their homes. There was no alarm or siren sounded in any of the areas which got submerged nor was any attempt made to evacuate people to safer areas before the water seeped in. Till date the Minister for Flood Control and senior Congress ...

Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, Oct 8: Keeping the house in order has become a challenge for the State Congress leadership as the cracks are getting deeper with each passing day.
If sources within the Congress are to be believed then the disenchantment among quite a few senior leaders against the party leadership has come to such a proportion that some of them are now thinking of leaving the party.
"The disillusionment has come to a level where many leaders, who dedicatedly served the party for several years, are feeling isolated in the organization…The sense of being dumped by the party leadership is definitely on the rise due to which some of them have made up their mind to quit the party," s...
| | Not Minister, Secretary remote controls PDD | 'Power Crisis' in J&K | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 8: Nero was fiddling while Rome was burning! Chief Minister Omar Abdullah heads Power Development Department (PDD) but if official galleries are to be believed, it is Power Secretary Arun Mehta who runs the show.
Result is that entire Jammu had plunged into darkness and people have no one to talk to, to find out when the power would be restored. If the sources are to be believed, Mehta enjoys similar kind of independence and power as was once enjoyed by now retired IAS officers B.R.Singh and Vijay Bakaya. Jammu, Oct 8: Merely putting a flag meeting on the hold by the MHA after six civilians were killed, over 60 injured and over 20,000 forced to leave their homes because of Pakistan shelling of civilian habitations in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts cannot be accepted as the 'befitting reply' to aggression started by the neighbouring country.
The fact that the latest spate of indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas in addition to specific targeting of BSF outposts by Pakistan rangers was started on an auspicious day like the Eid needs stronger understanding by New Delhi.
