TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Omar Abdullah must tread cautiously while lifting AFSPA
10/22/2011 12:20:06 AM
Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 21: State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said at the police commemoration day function in Zeewan today the armed forces special powers act (AFSPA) would be lifted from some areas within some days. Omar also said the decision is a great beginning. AFSPA gives powers to the security forces to operate against insurgents in various areas of the State. It is because of these powers the security forces especially the army has been able to clean many heavily infested areas from insurgents operating in those areas. Certain powers enjoyed by the security forces under the cover of the AFSPA might be sweeping in nature and still these very powers become necessary once the men in uniform have to fight an unseen enemy. It is because of the sacrifices made by the State police, the paramilitary forces and the army that we have reached a certain level of normalcy in most of the districts in the State. Nothing should be done to disturb the prevailing peace in the State. An informed decision on AFSPA can only be taken by the various intelligence agencies in consultat...

Tale of three information officers appointed by ex-CM!
10/22/2011 12:19:01 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 21: Appointment and subsequent unhindered elevation of three blue-eyed officers has virtually put a question mark on the "no non-sense" and "acting tough" claims of the state government. These three blue-eyed youngsters not only managed appointment as gazetted officers on adhoc basis but with their high profile connections enjoyed proximity with ministers of the respective governments. Documentary evidence available to Early Times reveals that ex-Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah appointed six press officers in the Information Department, three each from Kashmir and Jammu divisions, on contractual basis in January 2001 on a consolidated pay of Rs. 5000 for a...

Probe Against Mattoo
10/22/2011 12:04:56 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 21: The decision of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the behest of State Governor NN Vohra to order a probe into the alleged irregularities committed by former JU VC Amitabh Mattoo has been widely welcomed by one and all, especially those in the university, including teachers, students and administrative staff, minus those who enjoyed Mattoo's "patronage". Everyone, barring a selected few, had "suffered enormously" during the Mattoo's highly controversial regime. Sources say a "thorough probe, when completed within the stipulated period of ten days, would surely vindicate those who had demanded an enquiry into what they had called financial irregularities as w...

Crusade Against Corruption
10/22/2011 12:04:31 AM
Neha JAMMU, Oct 21: Problems of Anna Hazare, who has unleashed a crusade against corruption to cleanse the system of corrupt elements and establish a corruption-free society, are multiplying by the day. Anna calls his movement second freedom struggle. He appears right considering the state of the Indian society in which a handful of people misgovern the state and loot exchequer and fleece people. It is not only the Congress and the UPA government which are working overtime to weaken his movement. They are trying their best to paint Anna and his team black by telling the people that those who have launched anti-corruption movement are themselves corrupt and that their struggle is directed ...

Dialogue With Geelani
10/22/2011 12:04:01 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Oct 21: Congress-led UPA Government is toying with the idea of entering into dialogue with Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Geelani is pro-Pakistan. He is an extremist and communalist of an extreme variety and is known for instigating gullible Kashmiri Muslims against India. The reported move of the Union Government to engage with Geelani to find a solution to the Kashmir issue indicates its nervousness, as also its ambivalent stand on Jammu and Kashmir. Geelani, as everyone knows, would enter into a dialogue with New Delhi only if his four conditions are accepted. The conditions include release of what he calls "political prisoners" (read those involved in anti-state crimes); withdraw...
