J&K unable to pay power purchase bill, Rs 577.97 cr still outstanding
Power providers demand irrevocable LCs
3/30/2011 12:49:59 AM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Mar 29: Power deficient Jammu and Kashmir is in default of Rs. 577.97 crore to various power utilities in Northern India from which it purchased power during the financial year 2010-11. Though this default continues to be there since 2005 yet government claims of having improved the revenue generation and made improvement in plugging transmission and distribution losses. Further, irked over repeated fake promises of the officials of J&K power department, almost all the power utilities have sought opening of irrevocable letter of credit (LC) from the PDD within shortest possible time. Official documents reveal that despite repeated reminders for opening irrevocable LC, J&K PDD has not done anything substantial apart from promising payments to the power utilities before the closure of this financial year. Of the Rs. 577.97 crore, J&K has to pay around Rs. 339.81 crore as Union of India charges to Northern Region Power committee (NRPC). Directions have already been issued to the state to expedite payment of outstanding UI charges as on January 31, 2011 i...

A hush has fallen on entire India and Pakistan as people have started praying for victory, one for India and other for Pakistan. When compared to other states, particularly that in the north of India, Jammu and Kashmir is highly tense. Jaitley only made a statement of fact
Hindutva, BJP-Style
3/30/2011 12:47:01 AM
Neha JAMMU, Mar 29: Wikileaks cables on March 26 reported that Robert Blake, Charge d' affairs in the US Embassy in India, had conveyed to his government in Washington D C, after a meeting with senior BJP leader and presently Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley on May 6, 2005, that "Jaitley argued that Hindu nationalism 'will always be a talking point' for the BJP" and "characterized this as an opportunistic issue." This leak has put the BJP leadership on the mat and provided a god-sent opportunity to the otherwise cornered and despised Congress to hit back and call the BJP's bluff. Jaitley has, however, maintained that he had not used the word "opportunistic." He has said: "I...

May 27, 1949 A Black Day
3/30/2011 12:46:31 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Mar 29: A close scrutiny of the proceedings of the Indian Constituent Assembly reveals that the issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir were discussed twice - first on May 27, 1949, and finally on October 17, 1949. It also shows that the focus on this state on May 27 was far more sharp and revealing than what it was on October 17, despite the fact that the issue under discussion was highly sensitive and controversial and that the subjects discussed were two and not just one. (Article 370 was sensitive in the sense that it was designed to give Jammu and Kashmir the right to have its own constitution and a flag other than the national flag. This Article was adopted in no time, desp...
