Jammu, Jan 1: In its year-ender assessment for 2008, the Union Home Ministry on Wednesday said that there has been a notable improvement in law and order in both Jammu and Kashmir and the North East.
However, it said that the Naxal violence during the year remained at the same level as compared to last year in terms of number of incidents and casualties of security forces.
The communal situation in the country remained largely under control.
Acknowledging the major terrorist incidents in Rampur, Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Malegaon, Modasa and Mumbai, the ministry said Parliament had recently passed two major legislations- the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill,2008 and the National Investigating Agency Bill,2008 to ensure greater co-ordinated action by the Central and State intelligence and security Agencies,

Katra, Jan 1: As many as, 65,76,315 pilgrims have visited the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Deviji during the year 2008. This was disclosed by the Additional Chief Executive Officer Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Mr. M. K. Dwivedi here today.
On December 31, 2008 as many as 41,155 pilgrims paid their obeisance at the holy cave shrine as against 39,718 pilgrims who visited on that day in year 2007.

Jammu, Jan 1: Four months after agreement between Government and Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, a Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court has disposed an LPA on allotment of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
Disposing off the LPA filed by the state government against the order of the Single Judge in a much publicized allotment of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, a Division Bench of J&K High Court, comprising Justice YP Nargotra and Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, today observed that the both the parties have agreed to the disposal off appeal on the terms indicated in LPA, as they have already reached to an agreement on the issue.

Guwahati, Jan 01: At least five people were killed and 30 others were injured as serial bomb blasts rocked Assam's capital Guwahati on Thursday, the first day of 2009, hours ahead of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's visit to review the security situation in the state.
Reportedly, the first blast occurred in a crowded market at Birubari, the second blast at Bhootnath area in the city, which falls on the route Chidambaram was supposed to take, in which six people were injured. Jammu, Jan 1: With no consensus yet between the coalition partners on a range of issues, the Chief Minister designate Omar Abdullah reached New Delhi this afternoon to join senior leaders of the National Conference, to work out the modalities of the coalition government with their Congress counterparts.
