Saga of discrimination
10/22/2010 11:42:47 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah may be singing peens of redressing genuine grievances of people of Jammu region but when it comes to allocation of funds, official documents point out that Kashmir region enjoys a significant edge. From tourism ministry to school and higher education ministries, Kashmir gets major share in allocation of funds. Interesting is the case of tourism ministry whose in charge is MLA from Ladakh Nawang Rigzin Jora. Ministry during the last two financial years released Rs. 4697.05 lakh (Rs.2404.55 for 2008-09 and Rs.2292.50 for 2009-10) for boosting tourism in Jammu region under the state plan. On the contrary, the same tourism ministry allocated Rs. 10, 535.28 lakh during the last two financial years for Kashmir region. The only difference is that allocation was on the lesser side during the last financial year 2009-10 when the ministry allocated Rs. 4553.50 lakh for the development of tourism under the state plan as compared to Rs. 5981.78 allocated for the year 2008-09. Leh has got just Rs. 428 lakh for ...

Rustam EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: It is good that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P Chidambaram and interlocutors like Dileep Padgaonkar have announced that the panel of interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir would hold the "largest possible consultations with all sections of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir" to reach a conclusion. However, it is the statements issued subsequently by Chidambaram and Padgaonkar that have created a serious doubt in the minds of the people about their intentions. The statement of Chidambaram that there are "no red lines for interlocutors" and the assertion of Padgaonkar that their "mandate…is to seek as large area of agreement as you can to get t...

EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 22: The much hyped employment package was unveiled by the Chief Minister on the 104 birth anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah on December 5 last year has yet to take off. The package was announced to address what the Chief Minister called a gigantic unemployment problem in a principled manner. However, the package, Sher-e-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for Youth (SKEWPY) was simply forgotten. Even after ten months it could not be translated into reality. Bharat Bhushan EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: Haunted by the Chittisinghpura massacre of 35 Sikhs on the eve of the arrival of US president Bill Clinton on March 20, 2000, the Jammu and Kashmir government fears a terror strike ahead of Barack Obama's India visit early next month. The Chittisinghpura macabre incident preceded Clinton's arrival by only a few hours and the scale of the violence was large even amid the exceptional sorrows of the valley. The incident was linked to the US President's visit. For the first time, the victims were Sikhs, a religious minority never before targeted during the bloody decade infused with grief. It was a monstrous way of the militants to grab the i...

Plight of Jammu Muslims as bad as Hindus, Sikhs
Must blame Kashmiri rulers for utter neglect
10/22/2010 11:41:45 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 22: The plight of the Muslims of Jammu is highly pathetic. They, like the Hindus and Sikhs in this province, represent that segment of society that has never received its legitimate due share in the state’s political and economic processes. In fact, their life, like the life of other communities inhabiting the ignored Jammu province, is not one of political and economic aspirations, notwithstanding the fact that they belong to the majority community in the state that has been ruling Jammu and Kashmir since 1947. The Kashmir-based leaders have always exploited them for garnering votes, but when it comes to catering to their even basic needs they dismiss them as...

Delhi's Bungling Instinct
10/22/2010 11:40:01 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: The authorities in New Delhi bungled yesterday and alarmed the whole of the nation. They made the world believe that India is a banana republic where the separatists enjoy full freedom to preach secessionism and communalism and nationalists carrying tri-colour in their hands and raising pro-India slogans are booked, thrashed, punished and humiliated. Indeed, the authorities in the South and North Blocks and in the Delhi Government have allowed the separatists - Kashmiri and Maoist - to covert the Union Capital into a den of anti-national and break-India activities. How else should one interpret the manner in which the authorities allowed pro-Pakistan Syed ...
