Chairman doesn't want any more members in PSC
Basharat likely to get 3-year extension as MD PDC; other aspirants upset
12/18/2011 12:33:41 AM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz srinagar, Dec 17: After receiving a communication from Chairman SL Bhat that Jammu and Kashmir State Public Service Commission (PSC) was not currently in need of any more members, Omar Abdullah's government has shifted well-connected bureaucrat Basharat Ahmad Dhar to the State Power Development Corporation (PDC)---clearly to pave way for 'extension' of his service for the next three years. Bhat's communication is understood to have brought disappointment to nearly half-a-dozen senior government officials who had been pulling all possible strings for their appointment as members in PSC. While the search was underway for incumbents to fill up four vacancies and a number of retired and retiring public servants were trying all pulls and pressures, Bhat is said to have communicated to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that PSC did not require any more members as it was not currently overburdened. Highly placed bureaucratic sources revealed to Early Times that immediately after receiving the communication from PSC, Government began finding alternative opportunities for post-...

Is Sopore incident dissimilar to 1977 Anantnag stoning of Kashmir Mirwaiz's cavalcade?
12/18/2011 12:32:57 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 17: When Kashmir Mirwaiz and Chairman All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Molvi Umar Farooq, was interrupted and later his cavalcade was stoned at Sopore on Friday it made one to remember a major incident in which Molvi Umar's father, Molvi Farooq's cavalcade was stoned while he and his supporters were returning from Anantnag town after their poll campaign during the 1977 Assembly election. Though the two incidents were not similar in shape and size but the Friday's incident indicated how uneasy or difficult it is for a political leader to surface in an area which is not his stronghold. In 1977 election Molvi Farooq had forged an alliance with the Janata P...

What criteria are followed for releasing funds to Madrassa?
12/18/2011 12:32:42 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 17: The State government has issued an order number Edu/NC/SE/330/2011 dated 9th December 2011 releasing rupees three crores, forty seven lacs and eighty five thousand to 362 Madrassas in the state. Interestingly, the amount was sanctioned by the union finance ministry in March this year and the State government finally decided to release the amount to 362 Madrassas in December when the financial year is drawing to a close. The delay in releasing the funds apart, a more serious question has arisen through this disclosure. Which are the Madrassas those are being aided by the government? What is the curriculum that they are teaching to the students?...

Wait of over 60 years for justice
POK refugees up in arms against Govt
12/18/2011 12:32:20 AM
ET Report JAMMU, Dec 17: Waiting for justice for last over 60 years the POK refugees who have been victims of the 1947 partition and subsequent wars have been deprived of their rights till date. Continuing their struggle since the day one of their forced exodus from POK two generations of these refugees have passed seeking justice but the successive governments have turned a blind eye to their plight. Deprived of the ex-gratia and compensation for their left over properties the refugees since then are on roads for resolution of their demands but no one from both central and state governments is ready to listen to their plight. The refugees for over a year now are on agitation and hundre...

Will united J&K Cong again spring surprise over change of guard?
19 days to January 5
12/18/2011 12:31:56 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 17: Barring two cabinet ministers, both of whom are facing serious corruption charges, Jammu and Kashmir Congress is united over the issue of rotational Chief Ministership. Be it Ghulam Nabi Azad or Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz, they want their own Chief Minister. They are waiting for the high command to take a decision and communicate the same to the party rank and file within next one week. Sources said that seven congress MLAs, of whom five are ministers, have verbally as well as in writing communicated to Congress high command their demand of having their own Chief Minister by next month. They have informed New Delhi Congress that if their wish is not fulfilled...

She is 18 month pregnant! P/S Parimpora became faith healer's abode
12/18/2011 12:31:33 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 17: Her husband and in-laws had a sigh of relief when she informed them about her pregnancy. The poor women had been declared infertile by the gynaecologists. Now she was carrying a foetus in her womb. The delighted couple was all praise for the `faith healer' in the outskirts of Srinagar who had done the impossible with his Taweez (Amulet). The couple willingly paid him Rs 60,000. Scores of infertile couples rushed to him and he `obliged' all. Shazia (name changed) went for an USG after three months. It showed nothing. Shocked she rushed to the `faith healer' along with her husband. "Do not worry. Everything will be alright. You will give birth to a baby", ...

Prof Soz hints at reshuffle in J&K cabinet
'High command to take final call on rotational CM issue'
12/18/2011 12:31:12 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 17: In what can be seen as the two coalition partners NC and Congress now feeling the 'heat ' of political expediency in terms of filling the vacant posts in the ministry and giving a fresh shape to the cabinet, the JKPCC president Saif-u-Din today gave broad indications that reshuffle of the cabinet was on cards. Choosing not to give a straight answer to the queries related to much talked about issue of rotational Chief Minister, the veteran Congress leader the 'final' decision lay with the Party High Command and they would take it at 'appropriate' time. Prof Soz who is also the chairman of the Coordination Committee between the allies today said the lead...

Needed: Common Minimum Programme
Cong-NC Relations
12/18/2011 12:30:46 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Dec 17: One of the main reasons for the Congress' woes and miserable plight in Jammu & Kashmir is its failure to assert and establish that it is an equal partner in the state government, notwithstanding the fact the NC is in the driver's seat. If the NC has 28 legislators in the Legislative Assembly, the Congress is also not a microscopic minority. It commands the support of no less than 20 MLAs. The fact of the matter is that the NC, which has been behaving as if it is engaged in a single-party rule, cannot survive even for a moment without the active support of the Congress party. Had the Congress asserted its authority from time to time, its plight would not have been as ...

Jammu wants separation from Kashmir
Wrong Assessment
12/18/2011 12:30:26 AM
Neha JAMMU, Dec 17: Vested interests in the state and elsewhere in the country assert that no one in the state wants trifurcation of the state. Their assessment is as wrong as it is communally and politically motivated. The fact of the matter is that an overwhelming majority of people of Jammu province, like the people of Ladakh, wants the state to be reorganized on a regional basis forthwith so that each region becomes a master of its own fate. They may not be using the term trifurcation, but they are consistently demanding reorganization of the state. Reorganization of the state would mean trifurcation and nothing else. Those who say that the people of Jammu are not for the state's reo...

Militants to opt new strategy to avoid bloodshed on infiltration routes
12/18/2011 12:30:04 AM
Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Dec 17: In the face of dwindling local support to them and to avoid their early detection, the infiltrating militants have adopted the new strategy of avoiding bloodshed on the routes adopted by them after they sneak into the Indian territory. By not killing locals on this side of the border, their obvious aim is to send them a message that they would not harm them if they did not spy on them. A senior army officer, however, said their this strategy had not worked as locals had always volunteered to tell forces about infiltration attempts by Pak-based militants, if any. In the March 23 and April 19 incidents of infiltration from Akhnoor and Kathua respectively, loc...

Did NC President shot himself on foot deliberately to trouble Omar?
12/18/2011 12:29:49 AM
new delhi: Has the National Conference President and union minister for new and renewable sources of energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah shot himself on the foot? The latest fiasco from Dr. Farooq Abdullah could spell trouble for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah if highly placed sources are to be believed. The Congress President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi as well as the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh are reportedly upset with the elder Abdullah. What is disturbing for the State Chief Minister is the fact that the reported anger of the UPA chairperson and the Prime Minister has come just weeks before he completes three years in office. It is precisely because of this upsetting of the high c...

Cong may replace non - performing ministers' in JK
12/18/2011 12:29:33 AM
JAMMU: Non-performing Congress ministers beware need to pull up their socks as the party high command is contemplating replacing poor performers with fresh faces in the team of council of ministers of Omar Abdullah led coalition government . And a direct indication in this regard was given by none other than PCC Chief Prof Saif ud Din Soz during his brief interaction with the media persons here at the party headquarters. Responding to one of the questions on the possibility of much awaited cabinet expansion Prof Soz set the ball rolling by claiming that "It is overdue. There would be a reshuffle. Expansion may not apply because there is hardly any scope for that, he added. On January 5...
