New Delhi, April 11: Six major political parties have fielded at least 63 Lok Sabha candidates who face criminal charges or have a criminal past, says a group of election observers. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leads the list with 28 such candidates, says the National Election Watch (NEW), a grouping of NGOs.
There are also 13 from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), five each from the Congress and Samajwadi Party and two from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
Different courts have separately stopped five politicians convicted of crime from contesting the April-May elections.
They are Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs Pappu Yadav and Mohammed Shahabuddin, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Surajbhan Singh, former Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MP Anand Mohan and Samajwadi Party general secretary Sanjay Dutt.
According to NEW, the Congress, BJP, Communist Party of India, CPI-M, Samajwadi Party and BSP have so far named 730 candidates. They will name more in the days to come.
The group examined affidavits of 278 of the candidates.

Kasaragod, April 11: A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh warned of a "serious threat" from terrorists to the Lok Sabha election process, Defence Minister A K Antony on Saturday asked state governments to maintain utmost vigil to defeat their designs.
"We have solid information that the militants are plotting to hatch conspiracy within and outside the country to subvert the poll process and tarnish the image of democratic India. State governments must exercise close vigil in coastal belts," Antony said at an election meeting here.

The BJP today raked up its pet plan of abrogating Article 370 on special status to Jammu and Kashmir, but admitted to allies' objection to such a measure, which requires two-thirds majority in Parliament.
BJP national general secretary Arun Jaitley said, "BJP is asking for its scrapping. But, it is possible only when we have such political power in Parliament."
"Though some of our partners in NDA are not in favour of its removal, we stick to our stand. It can be scrapped only with two-thirds majority in Parliament."

Srinagar: National Conference, major ally in the ruling coalition, is likely to announce the candidates for the two parliamentary constituencies besides as many as by-election assembly seats on Sunday, sources told .

Srinagar: Contrary to the claims of all major political parties to give 33 per cent reservation to women candidates in Lok Sabha seats, only two fairer sex contestants are in fray for the three parliamentary seats in the state.
While there is a single woman candidate in fray for each of the two parliamentary segments in Jammu division, there is no female among 13 contestants in the south Kashmir Lok sabha seat.
According to reports , there are 21 candidates in fray from Jammu-Poonch seat with lone woman contestant, Shakeela Bano. Among the 14 candidates in fray for the Udhampur-Doda segment, there is also a single woman contestant in the shape of Kanchan Sharma.

JAMMU, APRIL 11 –Government today ordered release of 7 per cent additional Dearness Allowance (DA) in favour of State government employees including work charge and whole-time contingent paid employees.
The revised DA rates shall be effective from July 1, 2008 and the installment of DA payable under these orders shall be paid in cash along with the salary of April 2009. However, the DA arrears from July 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009 shall be paid along with the salary of May.
With this installment, the revised rate of total DA for the employees is now 54 per cent.
