Factionalism in Cong takes 'ugly turn'

EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 21 : The factionalism in the state unit of Congress which has been eating into the unity and image of the organisation for a long time now, took an ugly turn today when the supporters of the two groups resorted to fisticuffs and exchaged blows in presence of senior leaders from Centre. In the 'melee' the two 'warring' sides not only assaulted each other but also did not spare the newly appointed incharge of J&K, CWC member Mohan Prakash , who was allegedly hit by supporters of one of the group while fighting. It so happened in the Government guest House at Srinagar where the senior leaders alsong with Mohan Prakash were meeting the delegations of people including those from withing the party. Sources said the Congress leaders heard patiently the problems and hardships being faced by the workers at the organisational level but simply refused to to register or hear nay complaints or greivances against any leader of the party at the local level. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: At least eight persons, including five policemen, were wounded after cops tried to chase away alleged land encroachers at Chhani Himmat here today. Police sources said members of a particular community had encroached land of housing department at Chhani Himmat. When police parties reached the spot to vacate the land, resulting in injuries to five cops. Police resorted to lathicharge as a result of which three alleged land encroachers sustained injuries."Earlier the land along the bypass road at Chhani Himmat was vacated from them but they had again encroached upon it," the sources added. Woman dies during delivery, family protests

EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: After the death of a woman while delivering a baby at SMGS hospital here today due to the alleged negligence of doctors, her family members staged a protest. The baby too died soon after the delivery, police sources said, quoting protesters. Bholi Devi, wife of Kuldeep Singh of Ratanpur, Samba, was admitted to the SMGS hospital Sunday after she developed labour pain. The woman and her baby, however, died during the delivery, which sparked off strong protest, with the family members raising slogans against the doctors and the health authorities. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: Army chief, Gen V K Singh today reviewed the operational preparedness of armed forces in Jammu & Kashmir in the wake of changing environment and security scenario in the state. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: Panic gripped Kashmir after a moderate earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the state Monday.The epicenter of the quake was in the Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan, according to official sources. It occured at about 3.20 pm and lasted three seconds. Its tremors were also felt in Delhi, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Jaipur, the sources added.
