TOP STORY OF THE DAY
KAS selection: 70% fair, 30% unfair
Members, Secretary managed to take away their share
5/5/2011 12:28:22 AM
Early Times Report SRINAGAR/JAMMU: May 4: It is for the Government of Jammu & Kashmir and the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC) to explain why an officer of the rank of Additional Secretary was not appointed to replace Ghulam Hassan Mir as Controller and what was the compulsion in not only retaining Mohammad Ashraf Bukhari as Secretary of PSC but also assigning to him an additional charge last year. Even after Bukhari’s disobedience to accept his posting as DC of Kupwara, as ordered by Omar Abdullah’s Cabinet in May 2010, he continued to retain the dual charge of Controller. PSC also needs to explain why it did not use the option of recording the personality tests of different selections on camera in a state of alienation where credibility of the government institutions stands arguably at the lowest in the country. Almost all the 392 candidates, who were selected and appointed for Combined Administrative Services last month, understandably insist that the selection was “fair”. Thousands of those who failed to make it to the prestigious services swear that it ...

Omar admits futility of probes
132 inquiries in 14 years
5/4/2011 11:43:39 PM
Early Times Report Jammu, May 4: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah made a candid confession on social networking website Twitter. He said: "We'll make a lot of noise & order inquiries & then forget about it till the next one goes down.” This is Omar’s latest tweet to his friends. While Omar tweeted with his friends his MoS Home promised zero tolerance on human rights in an interview with a local news agency. The Home Minister and his MoS (Wani) must, however, know that the number of probes ordered since installation of democratic rule in 1996 have not helped the government achieve much publicized `zero tolerance’. In fact probes have been directly proportional to abuses. More probe...

MINCING NO WORDS NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 4: Convinced that they burnt their boats and lost the invaluable opportunity to capture political space from the Congress party by voting in favour of the NC, Congress and PDP candidates seeking election to the legislative council on April 13, the BJP and the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) have been trying desperately to recapture the lost political space. The leadership of these two so-called Jammu-centric and nation-centric formations, which remained in hibernation until May 2 for reasons not difficult to fathom, have suddenly become active and the issue they have taken up is the one that the NC-Congress coalition...
