Omar: NC stood 1st, PDP 2nd, Cong 3rd in Panchayat elections | First indication that Justice Imtiyaz would be a member and Justice Kakroo Chairman of SAC | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz
EARLY TIMES REPORT
srinagar, June 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today claimed that his party National Conference stood at number one while winning maximum number of seats in the just concluded Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir even as the principal opposition party, PDP, emerged as the first runner-up and the coalition partner, Congress, had to be content with the third position.
In a rare interaction with Srinagar-based media---just third after be became Chief Minister in January 2009---Omar Abdullah asserted that much like the Assembly elections of 2008 NC had secured most of the Panchayat segments, followed by PDP and Congress respectively. Asked for his reaction to the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti's repeatedly made claim that her party had won maximum number of seats in the recently concluded Panchayat elections, Omar said: "It's true that respective party symbols were not used in these elections. We must admit that all parties fielded their candidates. As Chief Minister, I am in possession of all statistics regarding performance of different polit...

Cable TV news to remain shut in Kashmir | | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz
EARLY TIMES REPORT
srinagar, June 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made it unambiguously clear at today's news conference that his Government would not permit any news and current affairs programmes on the cable television channels in Kashmir valley. He asked senior Congress leader and Minister incharge Irrigation and Public Health Engineering, Taj Mohiuddin, not to sacrifice his berth in the Cabinet over this issue.
When one of the mediapersons desired to learn from Chief Minister if there were any plans to lift the ban and permit news and current programmes on the cable TV channels and networks in Kashmir, Omar said: "No, we are not going to allow it". Chi...
| | CM's 'reach out venture with masses' | Why Jammu region kept out of Awami Mulakat ambit? | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: The endeavor of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to build direct rapport and contact with masses through the concept of Awami Mulaqats envisaged last year is indeed a noble step . It serves the twin purpose of dispelling the notion that CM keeps distance or is oblivious of the smaller issues masses are confronted with and helps in quick redressal of their problems as well. But one wonders why this public oriented endeavor has been confined to summer capital and masses of Kashmir. Are Jammu masses not so privileged to meet the Chief Minister and convey their problems directly to him ….?
It may not be a deliberate attempt on part of the Chief Minister to...
| | Sher-e-Kashmir also sought division of state | Advocating unity of JK! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: The National Conference has suddenly become a strong advocate of unity of Jammu Kashmir. Little do the present day NC leaders know that Sher-e-Kashmir also sought division of the state.
Sher-e-Kashmir favoured division of Jammu Kashmir (as suggested by Sir Owen Dixon) at one point of time. This stands proved by his letter to Col. Naseer of Egypt in 1965. The letter was published by a Jammu based newspaper and Muslim India a few years ago.
While giving a brief history of the conflict and its impact on global politics, Sher-e-Kashmir wrote "……No doubt the best and most democratic solution could be through a plebiscite should this not be feasible, the...
| | Ex-minister allegedly forces youth for 'bonded labour' | Takes police help to 'coerce' youth | | Sumit Sharma
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 22: Despite the existence of Article 23 of the Constitution, section 374 of IPC and Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act (BAL) of 1976, for eliminating bonded labour, the practice it seems continues even today in the state.
Ironically, the menace of 'bonded labour' is being pursued by none other than a senior politician who took police help to 'coerce' a youth working at his place for the last five years as a domestic help, not to leave the job.
The incident of 'forceful employment' came to light when an ex-minister allegedly forced a youth to stay put as a domestic help at his city based residence despite latter's persuasion to permanently g...

| | For BJP leadership Hamlet like to be or not to be is its question | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: The exercise on bringing seven BJP MLAs, who are said to have defied the party whip by indulging in cross voting during the none too old Legislative council election in Jammu and Kashmir, under the net of anti-defection law does not seem to be quite simple. It has become quite ticklish after one MLA, Chaman Lal Gupta, moved the court against the order expelling him from the primary membership of the organisation.
Though the speaker, Mohd. Akbar Lone, has, after seeing the court directions, stated that the courts cannot interfere in the affairs of the state legislature the matter of disqualification of the seven BJP legislators remains hanging between the...
| | Chidambaram left Congress workers high and dry | Advantage NC | | Rustam
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 22: It was expected that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram would do all that he could to strengthen the NC at the cost of the Congress and he did that. His statements that New Delhi and Congress "are happy with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah"; that "there are neither any differences between the coalition partners nor any divide in the state congress over the issue"; and that "everybody in the central government is happy with Omar as chief minister" (and) "so I make it clear that there will be no rotation" do demonstrate that the critics of the NC have no place whatever in the New Delhi's scheme of things and that they have to dance to the tunes of the N...

"I am heartened that India and Pakistan dialogue is continuing. We hope that Kashmir does find a mention during the talks as part of comprehensive dialogue and not as one-off," Omar told reporters here.
