TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Hoisting tri-colour: NC-BJP on a warpath
1/7/2011 12:22:45 AM
NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: One can understand the reasons behind the opposition of the defeated JKLF chairman Yasin Malik to the BJP's decision to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, on the Republic Day. After all, his whole politics is based on hatred and contempt. He and others of his ilk have all through poured venom on secular, democratic and liberal India and worked for the separation of Jammu and Kashmir on the ground that it is a Muslim-majority area. Hence, how could he and others of his ilk tolerate any India-centric activity in Kashmir? It needs to be noted that Malik on Tuesday dared the BJP to go on with the plan and said: "We will see who will hoist which flag." However, what is disturbing is the mind-boggling stand of the Chief Minister on the BJP's proposed plan. The Chief Minister on Wednesday warned the BJP against decision to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk saying the BJP would be responsible for "repercussions." "Unfortunately the BJP is never happy if there is not fire somewhere or the other. When Kashmir is burning that is also a ...

Undeterred by separatists threat, BJYM all set to hoist tricolour
1/7/2011 12:22:20 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: Taking a serious exception to JKLF supremo, Yasin Malik's threatening that the separatists will not allow hoisting of Tricolour at Lal Chowk in Capital city of Srinagar, BJYM, national vice president, Pawan Sharma said that his organisation will not be cowed down by separatist and militants threats. “We are committed to take the Ekta Sankalap yatra to Kashmir from different parts of the country to hoist the National Flag in the Lal Chowk,” he added. Maintaining that Kashmir is an integral part of India, Sharma said, no Indian needs to seek any permission from any body for hoisting the national flag in Kashmir. Those who are issuing the threats are playing ...

Toeing NC line, Congress slams BJP's flag hoisting plan
Flag hoisting at Lal Chowk provocative: Soz
1/7/2011 12:21:43 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 6: A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cautioned BJP against hoisting the national flag at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day, BJP's chief rival Congress lost no time in lashing out at the party for what they chose to call as a 'provocative plan'. "BJP is flourishing on divisive practices... it survives on a policy of dividing the people... they do not do it as a matter of long term politics... they do it only to make a tamasha..." , J&K PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz said today while speaking to media on the sidelines of a party convention in Jammu. Accusing BJP of playing to gallery Prof Soz said the move to hoist the flag on Republ...

CM acting like a separatist leader: Chaman
1/7/2011 12:21:02 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 6: Asserting that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) will go ahead with its proposed plan of hoisting tricolour at Lal Chowk on January 26, the leader of BJP Legislature party Prof Chaman Lal Gupta today said that by opposing the flag hoisting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is speaking the language of separatists. "Instead of initiating action against Yaseen Malik and other separatists who are threatening BJP leadership over its flag hoisting programme, the CM himself is resisting the move thereby indicating that he himself is virtually acting like a separatist leader" Prof Chaman Lal said "Whatever Chief Minister said regarding BJP's flag hoisting yesterday is self-...

PDP too unhappy, Bhim Singh terms it as NC-BJP conspiracy
1/7/2011 12:20:34 AM
ET REPORT Jammu, Jan 6: Speaking on somewhat similar tone of ruling allies , the main opposition of the state PDP also opposed the scheduled flag hoisting prgramme of youth wing of BJP on Republic Day at Lal Chowk. PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said that whenever the BJP was out of power, it resorted to such 'gimmicks'. Criticising the party, Mufti said that when the BJP was in power, it did not 'talk of abrogation of Article 370 , and now it is raking up the issue while it is out of power.' This is only doublespeak and gimmick of the party, he added. Pertinent to mention is that almost all parties in Kashmir, including the separatists, have decided to oppos...

BJP firm, to go ahead with flag hoisting in Srinagar
1/7/2011 12:20:10 AM
ET REPORT Jammu, Jan 6: Not concerned over criticism of ruling as well as opposition parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will go ahead with its plans to hoist the Indian tricolour at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day. Party is firm despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah having cautioned about the 'repercussions' and asked the party to desist from the move. Reacting to the chief minister's assertions on Wednesday that hoisting the Indian national flag at Lal Chowk on Jan 26 would serve as a provocation to the people of Kashmir, the BJP leaders here said that 'Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, and they would go ahead with the plan'. 'We will go ahead wit...

1/7/2011 12:19:54 AM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: "The three-month-long violence in Jammu and Kashmir last year was unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Major decline in violence there have raised hopes of a settlement this year.' The three-month period of agitation was an unfortunate and deeply regrettable chapter. However, after the visit of the all-party Parliamentary delegation and the appointment of interlocutors, there has been a significant improvement in the law and order situation. In particular, the interlocutors have been able to change the discourse and have been able to persuade a number of stakeholders to offer suggestions for a political solution.'' -- Union Home Minister P Chidambar...

1/7/2011 12:19:34 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: Hurriyat chairman, Syed Ali Geelani while addressing seminar on January 5 in the summer capital said he wanted self determination for all the people of Jammu Kashmir. "We want this right for Kashmir Muslims, Jammu Hindus and Ladakh Buddhists", he made clear. Geelani also opposed division of the state. Self determination and unity of state cannot go together in a state like Jammu Kashmir where people profess different faiths and speak different languages. Is Geelani aware of the aspirations of the people of Jammu region? Does he know what the people in Ladakh want? People close to Geelani say that the Jammu Hindus and Ladakh Buddhists will also exercise...
