DDG admonishes Masoodi for ignoring RTI petition
Jammu advocate approaches Ambika, seeks probe in Srinagar DD scams
11/24/2010 12:43:48 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 23: Continuously boasting of his "strong connections' to the Union Minister of Health and former J&K Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Director of Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Srinagar, Dr Rafeeq Masoodi, has not only ignored directions from Prasar Bharti Broadcasting Corporation of India and Directorate General of Doordarshan but also sponsored a campaign to grab the additional charge of Radio Kashmir Srinagar and Commercial Broadcasting Service of All India Radio in Srinagar. Well-placed sources in DD revealed to Early Times that immediately after managing his rival Bashir Arif's unceremonious exit on October 29th by way of a four-month-long agitation in Radio Kashmir Srinagar, Masoodi had begun all-out efforts to get the additional charge of RKS as well as CBS in Srinagar. Even as his patron and CEO of PBBCCI, BS Lalli, has been cut to size by the political establishment and bureaucracy earlier this month, Masoodi is reportedly enjoying remarkable support from Azad and his well-entrenched coterie in New Delhi. According to these sources, PBBCCI an...

‘Omar needs to change his advisors’
11/24/2010 12:43:15 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 23: But for his advisors, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah would have performed better. This is what the political circles believe. Omar has a right to differ but as they say "vox populi vox dee" (voice of people is voice of God), he needs to give a serious thought to replacing his advisors. Omar's political advisor, Davinder Singh Rana is a renowned and successful businessman but a new entrant into politics. The Chief Minister of a troubled state must have an experienced political advisor. Rana, on the contrary does not know much about politics his claims to the contrary notwithstanding. Rana almost caused cracks in the National Conference. Seniors like Ali M...

Police patted back after arresting kin of KC, Jewels groups but observe mum over rape case
11/24/2010 12:43:04 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 23: Tall claim of police is again come under scanner when it shielded a rape accused and put pressure on the girl to withdraw her complaint. It was barely two months ago when police patted its back claiming that they had arrested two kin of KC groups and Jewel groups who were allegedly involved in beating of a youth in Gandhi Nagar locality , but in case of heinous crime like rape police observe mum. The reason behind negligence in rape case is crystal clear as in this case police is unable to avail media hype . In beating case police conducted raids at the residences of the influential personalities at mid night while in rape case no action on t...

Rehabilitation policy stirs up 'hornets nest'
Congress reticent……., fearing political backlash in Jammu?
11/23/2010 11:58:55 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 23: Even as the Congress as a major ally of the J&K coalition government led by NC did not resist the approval of draft policy of the Rehabilitation Policy for the militants in POK, the party leadership and the ministers, particularly have chosen to maintain absolute silence, rather reticence over the issue. The policy which is largely being seen as giving direct political benefit to NC, has become one more reason of discomfiture for Congress which is fearing a political backlash in Jammu region. A day after the entire cabinet gave a nod to the policy in the meeting, the Congress ministers, at least from Jammu as always found themselves uneasy with media quer...

China appears to be changing its J&K policy
11/23/2010 11:58:25 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT New Delhi, Nov 23: China appears to be finally responding to India's concerns over the issuance of stapled visas to people of Jammu and Kashmir, a matter taken up recently by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao. In a move indicative of shift in Chinese policy on Jammu and Kashmir, Tanya Gupta, a singer from the state has been issued a stamped visa, instead of a stapled one, to travel to perform at the closing ceremony of the ongoing Asian Games in Guangzhou on November 27. The Chinese have been issuing visa on a separate sheet, stapled to the passports of residents of Jammu and Kashmir for more than an year, thereby questioning the sta...

Giri's encounter killing challenged, family to approach NHRC, SHRC
Family refuses to digest police theory, alleging his was a "staged encounter"
11/23/2010 11:58:11 PM
ET REPORT JAMMU, Nov 23: Two days after police said they had killed Rakesh Singh Giri in an encounter near Satyam Resorts here, the victim's family and relatives today vehemently refuted police claim, alleging he was "murdered" in a staged encounter. This serious allegation against police was levelled by them during their anti-police protests at RS Pura and Kunjwani. Disputing the police claim that he was killed in an encounter, agitated family members said they would approach NHRC and SHRC with a complaint against police in this regard. They also demanded a CBI probe into the incident to bring the facts to light. Local MLA Gharu Ram and ex-municipal committee chairman, RS Pura, Bh...

Omar silent over youth's death in police "encounter"
11/23/2010 11:57:37 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 23: The "historical" double standards adopted by the Kashmiri rulers while dealing with situations in Kashmir and Jammu regions have become more evident with chief minister Omar Abdullah not uttering a single word on the killing of Rakesh Singh Giri in the alleged police encounter near Satyam Resorts here Sunday. Had this been an incident of Kashmir, he would have definitely reacted to it. His silence in this case hints at the double standards adopted by his government in dealing with the situations in the two regions. Though on the advice of his seniors in politics, including PCC chief Saifudin Soz, Omar remains updated with the functioning of government...

Omar hijacks Mufti's agenda to regain his lost ground
11/23/2010 11:56:51 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 23: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, seems to be adept in hijacking the agenda set by the PDP and the Kashmiri separatists. When the state cabinet decided in favour of the policy on the rehabilitation of those Kashmiri youths who had crossed over to Pakistan and occupied Kashmir between 1989 and end of 2009 it spoke volumes about Omar's art of hijacking the goals set by either the PDP or the Hurriyat Conference leadership. About eight months ago Omar Abdullah embarked on the course of hijacking the PDP and the separatists' agenda on the withdrawal of troops and the AFSPA. At one stage Omar was seen trying to convince the centre over the positive points of the ...

Sufi shrines of Jammu, epitome of communal harmony
11/23/2010 11:56:06 PM
KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 23: They make religious lines blur. Shahzad and Mukesh, a devout Muslim and a devout Hindu don't think twice about their respective religious affiliations while visiting Sufi shrines spread across Jammu city as their faith in the epitomes of communal harmony of not only yesteryears but of present times also, is supreme. Come Thursdays and roads leading to several Sufi shrines in the winter capital of the state wore a festive look since a sea of humanity, belonging to different communities, converges at these century old 'dargahs'. Another popular occasion for visiting the shrines is during the 'Urs' celebrations of the immortal saints. For s...

India Today's survey highly flawed, Omar's government a flop
11/23/2010 12:20:38 AM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is very happy these days. He must be patting himself and boasting that he has handed down to the people of the state a great administration that has revolutionized the healthcare system and improved the educational system to the extent no one would have ever expected. He must also be thanking India Today for what it did for reasons best known to its management to create an impression in the corridors of power in New Delhi that Omar Abdullah has delivered despite unrest, violence, shutdowns and curfews in Kashmir and that the Union Government was absolutely wrong in criticizing the Chief Minister for what it called "gove...
