JAMMU, Jan 16: The fresh snowfall in the valley has yet again raised questions about efficiency of the government. It failed to take note of the meteorological department's warning that had predicted heavy snowfall from Saturday. Had the government awakened on time, the situation today would have been different.
And when snow has again thrown life out of gear, the Chief Minister has asked the National Highway Authority and BEACONS to redouble their efforts in restoring Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for traffic to help pushing essential commodities and LPG to the Valley from Jammu on priority.

Jammu, Jan 16: The Vaishnodevi pilgrimage is going on despite snowfall continuing in and around the cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, officials said. "Snowfall is continuing in and around the Mata Vaishnodevi shrine. There is already four to five inches of snowfall triggering extreme cold conditions," they said. The shrine and its adjoining area at Trikuta hills received the season's first snowfall on January 6. Despite the cold condition, the pilgrimage is going on smoothly and over 5,000 pilgrims are undertaking yatra to the shrine, they said. Jammu, Jan 16: Jammu and Kashmir is least literate among northern states including the newly carved out Uttarakhand, reveals the latest census report.
Though the state's literate population has been pegged at more than 68 percent of the total 1.25 crore persons - with a decadal growth of 13 percent - it is far behind other northern states like Himachal Pradesh (83.78 percent), Punjab (76.68 percent) Haryana (76.64 percent), Delhi (86.34 percent) and newly created Uttarakhand (79.63 percent).
