Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 16: The inclement weather conditions have once again put the state machinery on toes in order to ensure best possible services and supplies to areas affected by fresh snowfall. While the two ministers of ruling National Conference are already in Srinagar, J&K PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz has directed senior ministers of his party to rush to Kashmir Valley and provide helping hand to the state administration. While the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has chosen this time to take assessment of the prevalent situation through video conferencing with inputs provided about snow bound districts from his senior minister Ali Mohammad Sagar and Divisional Commissioner , the PCC chief too has directed his ministers to be present there and do whatever possible to provide some relief to the masses in hardships on various fronts. Thin attendance was marked in private as well as government offices due to heavy downpour and cold. Furthermore, even thin attendance was marked in government and private schools with most of the city residents opting not to send their wards observing bad weather conditions. Heavy snowfall fails to deter Vaishnodevi pilgrims, yatra on

Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 16: The Vaishnodevi pilgrimage is going on despite snowfall continuing in and around the cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, officials said. "Snowfall is continuing in and around the Mata Vaishnodevi shrine. There is already four to five inches of snowfall triggering extreme cold conditions," they said. The shrine and its adjoining area at Trikuta hills received the season's first snowfall on January 6. Despite the cold condition, the pilgrimage is going on smoothly and over 5,000 pilgrims are undertaking yatra to the shrine, they said. Though the state's literate population has been pegged at more than 68 percent of the total 1.25 crore persons - with a decadal growth of 13 percent - it is far behind other northern states like Himachal Pradesh (83.78 percent), Punjab (76.68 percent) Haryana (76.64 percent), Delhi (86.34 percent) and newly created Uttarakhand (79.63 percent).
