TOP STORY OF THE DAY
What went wrong with Omar’s Kashmir?
Contrary to Sheikh’s egoism and Farooq’s jingoism, ‘youngest CM’ lived under inferiority complex.
8/12/2010 11:49:04 PM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Aug 12: Phenomenal success of the Assembly elections of 2008 set in a wave of jubilation and euphoria in the mainstream political circles and establishment from Srinagar to New Delhi. A little over 61% of the electorate had exercised their franchise---over 1700,000 of them in Kashmir valley alone---without any sort of coercion, fist time since 1987. Few among the political analysts and very senior politicians had expected this historic turnout in an Indian democratic exercise held in weeks of a mass street agitation in the Valley. Most of the people, who participated in the election, as well as many of those who did not, for varied reasons, seemed to have reasons behind their relief. The elections reversed the situation of an unprecedented regional and communal witnessed in the middle of 2008. There was a lot of jubilation over Omar Abdullah becoming the country's youngest Chief Minister. They thought the young Chief Minister understood the importance of blending employment opportunities, development and political resolution of the Ka...

8/12/2010 11:09:20 PM

The elder son is in class 12th and younger one in 10th standard. Continuous strikes and curfew which has taken heavy toll on the education system is forcing many parents of valley to temporarily shift to Jammu or Delhi to make up the mounting loss of time in private coaching centres and tutorials outside Kashmir. It’s not BJP, it’s spokesperson of PM & NC
8/12/2010 10:58:54 PM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 12: Something is fundamentally wrong with the J&K unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The manner in which its leadership is conducting itself indicates that it has lost its moorings. The fact of the matter is that it has lost its very identity. It would be only appropriate to say that the BJP leadership in the state has become the official spokesperson of the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Prime Minister. The BJP-watchers say that the BJP leadership is confused, directionless and issueless; that the BJP leadership is ambivalent; and that it is just not able to decide what kind of role it should play in the troubled-state. So much so, th...

Nehru knew UN won't act
`Expecting solution through resolutions is madness’
8/12/2010 10:56:12 PM
Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 12: The Kashmir issue was taken to the UNO by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru on January 1, 1948. On August 13 same year a resolution was passed. Nothing has moved since then because the resolutions only acknowledge the right to self determination. The resolutions to the dismay of the people of Kashmir cannot be implemented contrary to the belief of the leadership. Why has UNO failed in solving the long pending dispute? By the end of December Indian army had pushed back the Tribals and the indigenous state subjects of Jammu Kashmir to a position where the armies of India and Pakistan stand now. In fact, the government of India did no...

DELHI MEET ON J&K
8/12/2010 10:55:19 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 12: As expected, the initiative of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ascertain the views of the various political parties on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and discuss ways and means to surmount the problem India is facing in the state has evoked a very sharp reaction in Jammu, leave aside Kashmir where all the leaders, without any exception, are against India one way or the other. The people of Jammu have not only rejected out-of-hand the Prime Minister’s comments on autonomy, notwithstanding the fact that he made it loud and clear that New Delhi would be willing to consider the demand for autonomy only if there is “consensus” on this controversial issue, ...
