TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Top class politicians among hundreds of tax defaulters in J&K
Tax defaulters cause Rs 303 crore loss in Kashmir, 289 in Jammu
7/14/2011 12:18:56 AM
Sumit Sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 13: Top class politicians, private motor companies among hundred persons are tax defaulters in the state causing loss to the tune of Rs 600 crore to the public exchequer. The documents in possession of Early Times reveal that many top dignitaries of the state are tax evaders who are liable to pay to the tune of crores but enjoying the government patronage are hence scot-free. Sales Tax, which is the essential component of grant-in-aid starved state like Jammu and Kashmir, is worst hit among others taxes. Though an intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had called for an immediate action against defaulters, the concerned department immediate swung into action, prepared a list of the defaulters and submitted the same to the minister AR Rather through Commissioner Commercial Taxes ,Jammu and Kashmir to crack down on the defaulters. However the important factor that may keep the things hiding would be involvement of the top political as well as bureaucratic brass figuring among the defaulters. The matter of sale tax defaulters...

Lopsided planning scenario in Jammu a major concern….
Jammu district actually got Rs 31 cr as annual plan……?
7/14/2011 12:18:20 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, July 13: Notwithstanding the bid of the NC led government to overdraw the projections and overestimate what has been given to Jammu in the annual plan size, people of Jammu and the 11 MLAs have no reason to feel upbeat. As against the projected amount of Rs 92.53 cr, the actual plan amount meant for Jammu's development for the entire year is not more than Rs 31 cr, say the financial experts. The rest, they say is the component that falls under various loan categories. J&K state got a plan size of Rs 6,600 cr for current financial year out of which the government has fixed Rs 92.53 cr for Jammu which is main district and vast in terms of population and constitue...

In Omar's Kashmir, rape victim can't get compensation!
7/14/2011 12:17:46 AM
Early Times Report srinagar, July 13: Even as Rahul Gandhi is seen in a police station in Uttar Pradesh to help a rape victim, his friend Omar Abdullah's government believes that there was no provision to compensate a rape victim in this neglected state. "Relief can be provided in case of death, injury or property damages if caused by subversive activity", said a senior official when reminded of SHRC ruling recommending relief to the tune of Rs 75000 to the victim. The government has directed the Home Department to ensure that the concerned security formation pays the relief amount to the victim. On May 26 1993 Army men stationed at Keigam camp allegedly raped 18-year-old Shahmali d...

Weekend Trips of Jammu Ministers punch holes in Exchequer……?
7/14/2011 12:17:30 AM
Early Times Report srinagar, July 13: Flouting Chief Minister's directions to keep the secretariat fully functional at Jammu during summer months, the ministers visit the winter capital as per their own convenience. The ministers have been accused of ignoring the roaster prepared by the general administration department. The lapse on the part of the ministers has adversely affected the functioning of the secretariat at Jammu. Normal functioning has resumed after Chief Minister intervened. The things have been streamlined also on account of current Amarnath Yatra, when the presence of Ministers becomes all the more important to take stock of the arrangements, almost on day to day basis. ...

Voices at Jammu RTC pose serious questions to govt
7/14/2011 12:17:14 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, July 13: The two day RTC for interlocutors to register impressions this time on fronts other than political in Jammu culminated albeit on caution by some speakers on the political note which put both government and protagonists of so called secularism and pluralism in rather embarrassing position. They were none other than those having affliations with BJP who questioned NC government's position on some key issues confronting the state. If it was a question from BJP leader Dr Jitender Singh to contest NC led coalition's silence on empoweing Panhayats so far inspite of having elected representatives through polls, the argument was unexpectedly supported by veteran...

KPs take strong exception to remarks from Kashmiri Panelists
Aiyar, Taj oppose autonomy while BJP leaders made some pointed references
7/14/2011 12:16:59 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, July 13: There was no unanimity among the views of panelists in two days round table conference organized by interlocutors on restoration of composite culture in Jammu and Kashmir state which concluded here yesterday. While the Congress leaders Mani Shanker Aiyar and Minister of PHE, Irrigation and Flood control Taj Mohi-ud-Din were not in favour of restoration autonomy or grant of self rule to J&K state as a permanent solution to the problem, the intellectuals from Kashmir had a different view on prevailing situation in J&K. Some Panelists from Kashmir while referring to problems of Jammu Dogras said that Dogras were confined to two and half districts only w...

Interlocutors excluded Madan & Lal from RTC
Why Aiyar & Sushant?
7/14/2011 12:16:01 AM
Rustam Jammu, July 13: It was strange that the interlocutors for J&K ensured the participation of MPs like Mani Shankar Aiyer and Dr Rajan Sushant and several others from outside the state (who had no stakes in the state) in the roundtable conference but did not ensure the participation of the two Congress MPs from Jammu province Madan Lal Sharma and Lal Singh. Madan Lal Sharma was very much here in Jammu on the day roundtable conference started. Lal Singh was also there in Kathua on that day. Was it a deliberate attempt on the part of the interlocutors to exclude Madan and Lal and include the likes of Aiyer whose credentials are doubtful? Aiyer is a known supporter of those demanding gr...

Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 13: ABVP, student wing of the RSS, which remained dormant during the past two years or so and adopted indifferent attitude to the demand in Jammu for the establishment of Central University in Jammu, has finally taken the plunge and warned that it would intensify its agitation in case the Central University is not made functional forthwith.
