TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Basharat Dhar claims he didn't change DOB
Law Deptt sources: IAS officer's changed DOB was endorsed by City Munsif in 1989 but rejected by High Court in 2002
10/18/2011 12:37:24 AM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, Oct 17: Senior IAS officer and Commissioner-Secretary Power Development Department, Basharat Ahmad Dhar, today claimed that he had neither changed nor manipulated his Date of Birth (DoB) to overstay in service. Sources in the government's Law Department, however, insisted that the IAS officer had obtained a desired order from the court of City Munsif in Srinagar in May 1989 for effecting change in his DOB but the same order was quashed by J&K High Court in 2002. In reaction to two news reports carried by this newspaper on October 15th and October 17th, Commissioner-Secretary PDD, Basharat Ahmad Dhar, asserted today that he had "never ever in my life" changed or manipulated his DOB to overstay in government service. Without publishing any facts approvingly and without identifying any officer, Early Times had only reported that Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) had received an anonymous complaint and sought verification from J&K Chief Secretary as well as Accountant General (AG). Dhar said that the news reports were about himself and it was none other th...

Azad avoids queries as functionaries echo 'growing aspiration'
Visiting Cong leaders face 'same music' over and again
10/18/2011 12:36:50 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 17: Post custodial death row that has cast a shadow on ties of ruling alliance partners, even as Congress is trying hard to save its image through damage control political statements , it is faced with a piquant situation from within the party- the pestering over pressing demand from workers and cadres at all levels over rotational Chief Minister . While in simple terms it implies the Congress down the whole heirarchy in the state unit strongly seeks a change of guard by the end of current year, there is still no word from Congress High command. And ironically, all the stalwarts facing this question almost everyday at present is throwing the ball straight in...

Kashmir weakening Anna's movement against corruption
Meeting With Rahul
10/18/2011 12:31:20 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Oct 17: Only recently, social activist Anna Hazare attracted enormous publicity and attention from across the country and even on a global scale for the crusade he launched against corruption. His methodology and appeal were so effective that all, barring the corrupt, swung solidly behind him. His was a spectacular feat considering the fact that he had no organization of his. Notwithstanding this limitation, Anna's crusade against corruption produced some tangible results, the most important being the assurance held out by the Parliament that an effective Lokpal legislation would be enacted in the ensuing winter session. And, just at a time when it appeared that he would acc...

Family to move court for CBI probe
Yusuf killing row
10/18/2011 12:30:51 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: By ordering a judicial probe into National Conference (NC) worker, Syed Yusuf's death, the Chief Minister may have silenced the opposition for the time being but, reports from the family suggest the Chief Minister cannot have the last laugh. The deceased Yusuf's son Syed Talib while rejecting the probe ordered by the state government as a mere eyewash said the family intends to seek judicial intervention for a CIB probe into the `killing'. Talking to Early Times today, Talib said: "The mourning is still on. We have to perform several rites. As soon as we are free, we will prefer a petition in the High Court and seek a CIB probe into the killing." Yusuf...

Did Late Haji Yousuf fix just two political deals?
10/18/2011 12:30:22 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: Was Haji Yousuf such a trustworthy NC broker that even the representative of the Chief Minister in Ganderbal constituency and NC block, president Yusuf Bhat decided to trust Haji Yousuf with Rs. 85 lacs to become a minister? Was Haji Yousuf such a trustworthy fixer that his son and relatives claimed even Nasir Aslam Wani, the MOS (Home) owed his job to Haji Yousuf? Like many other mysteries, the mystery of Yousuf's political reach is still shrouded in haze. If somebody politically close to the Chief Minister decides to approach the party high command through Haji Yousuf, then it can reasonably be argued he was not privy to just two deals, one of getting ...

Discriminating Between Lakes -- II
10/18/2011 12:29:59 AM
Neha JAMMU, Oct 17: It needs to be emphasized that the Union Government has over the years pumped into Kashmir thousands and thousands crore of rupees to conserve and beautify the Dal and Nageen Lakes and other water-bodies in the Valley as well as River Jhelum with Jammu province not even getting crumbs. And, this, notwithstanding the fact that urgent steps were needed to be taken forthwith to conserve lakes in Jammu like Mansar, Surnsar and Sanasar. But neither the State Government nor the union Government had anything in its kitty for the conservation and beautification of these lakes. The State Government did knock at the doors of the Union Government a few months ago for "revalidatio...

A win and not a triumph for team Anna in Hisar poll
10/18/2011 12:29:22 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: Is defeat of the Congress candidate in the Jat dominated Hisar Lok Sabha constituency bypoll election in Haryana a victory for the team Anna? Is it a victory for Arvind Kejriwal who as a Hisarite campaigned in favour of Kuldeep Bishnoi, Haryana Janhit Congress-BJP candidate? Well if the poll results in 2009 are taken into account the victory of JHC-BJP candidate cannot be treated solely as a win for the team Anna. In 2009 Kuldeep Bishnoi's father, Bhajan Lal, who had remained Chief Minister of Haryana for more than twice, had won the seat by polling 2.48 lakhs against 2.41 lakhs votes polled by Sampat Singh. Jai Prakash had polled 2.04 lakh votes. This in...

Omar has a word of advise for Anna
10/18/2011 12:28:21 AM
SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister has suggested to Team Anna to campaign against Congress at a place considered a strong bastion of the party. "This way the team would have tested their ability to manipulate the result", he tweeted. Omar said Congress was not so strong in Hisar. "It was not a Congress seat so it's hardly indicative of anything in the scheme of things," he added. Anna Hazare's supporters had campaigned in Haryana's Hisar town and asked the people not to vote for the Congress as it did not support the Jan Lokpal Bill. Haryana Janhit Congress' Kuldeep Singh Bishnoi won the Hisar Parliamentary by-election on Monday, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INL...
