JAMMU, Feb 6: Five people, including three children were killed and an equal number injured when huge pieces of rock slid from a hillock and fell on two houses in Kargil district of Ladakh region today.
Officials said that the incident took place at Village Garkone situated on the Batalik Highway. And on the other side, Jammu and Kashmir disaster management cell today issued a medium-danger avalanche warning at Banihal on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as gusty winds blew across the summer capital, uprooting trees and electricity poles at some places
Reports pouring in informed that rescue operations were launched immediately and police party along with medical team was deployed for rescue operations which were being monitored closely by Tehsildar Kargil. The rock slides were initially noticed by army personnel at around 1 am in the intervening night of February 5 and 6. Sources added that army informed the police immediately.

Jammu, Feb 6: The Jama't-e-Islami may pull out of Geelani's Hurriyat by April. This was disclosed by the Amir (Chief) of Jama't this evening while talking to a local news agency. The Chief also ruled out the possibility of joining the Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference.
The Jama't took strong exception to Geelani's biography by Dr Shafi Shariti which was released last year. The Jama't had accused the author of maligning the image of the organization. KATHUA, Feb 06: Two persons were today admitted to the Hiranagar sub-district hospital here after they became unconscious due to the alleged police torture.
They were identified as Pawan, son of Joginder, and Neeraj, son of Bittoo, both residents of Kote Punnu.
Official sources said the trouble started over the alleged abduction of Rajni, daughter of Jagdish, by one Ashwani. Jammu, Feb 6: The National Conference and Congress legislators have reached a consensus on filling the vacant ministerial berths in the state cabinet, a local news agency quoting `informed' sources said today.
According to the sources, hectic activity was going on in New Delhi with politicians lobbying for ministerial berths. The cabinet has presently 22 ministers. At least three berths are vacant. This includes the berth of former R&B minister, GM Saroori who was forced to quit last year.

JAMMU, Feb 6: Jammu and Kashmir government has received the clearance from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for the appointment of an income tax officer as the state's first chief information commissioner (CIC), an official said on Sunday.
A panel headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had recommended G.R.Sufi's name for appointment as the CIC Jan 27, but Governor NN Vohra had sent back the file saying that the CVC clearance be attached with it. "Subsequently, the CVC's clearance was sought and it has been received," an official said. "The file would be sent back to the governor," he added.
